Sermon + Bible Study Notes: Hezekiah Part II: When you get right, expect a fight! (2 Chronicles 32)
The Medes and the Babylonians begin to take Assyrian territory, including its capital city. In , the Babylonians and the Medes take the city of Nineveh. That last claimant to the throne of the Assyrian empire, clusters with the remnants of his army about him in Haran, which is eastern Turkey, and he meets defeat at the hands of the Babylonians in BC.
So what does that mean? So what? Thank you, preacher, for the history lesson. So the Assyrians, that gives them a lot of power and a lot of opportunity. The Assyrians are very busy. They were trying to fend off colonial alliances that were threatening to do them in. God is engaged in the affairs of nations. God Himself is engaged in the affairs of nations. He was then; He is now. And in this case, He makes room for the efforts of a faithful servant to restore the right worship of God among His people.
He directs it wherever He will. The 2 Kings passage really emphasizes the cleansing of the nations - pulling out all of the idols and the idolatry. The 2 Chronicles passage really emphasizes more the reinstitution of the Passover. Two very big events that Josiah was involved in. Well that being said, let me read the first seven verses of chapter And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherim, and the carved and the metal images. And they chopped down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he cut down the incense altars that stood above them. And he broke in pieces the Asherim and the carved and the metal images, and he made dust of them and scattered it over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
He also burned the bones of the priests on their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

And in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their ruins all around, he broke down the altars and beat the Asherim and the images into powder and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem. What do we learn? We learn a couple of things. The power of legacy.
Go back to verses 2 and 3. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in the ways of David his father; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. He cleansed the temple, he instituted the Passover, he removed the idols and the items of idolatry from the land of Judah as well as the territory of Israel. Hezekiah had a deep heart and a great vision for the people of Israel, not just for the people of Judah, for the whole people of God.
Josiah did as well. Where did Josiah learn to be a king? He learned to be a king from David; he learned to be a king from Hezekiah - men whom he had never seen and who never knew him. We thank God for the power of legacy. Where did Timothy learn his faith? He learned his faith from his grandmother, Lois, and his grandmother, Eunice. Continue to be faithful. Continue to teach them, as teachable moments arise, continue to walk worthy of the Gospel in front of them.
They may make a study of appearing uncaring, unnoticing, uninterested. You and I get to live it with our children, our grandchildren, our great-grandchildren, every day. This is about the discovery of the book of the Law:. And when the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes.

For great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book. Most likely, a portion of the book of Deuteronomy because of the actions that Josiah takes following its discovery. A portion perhaps, a larger portion perhaps of the Torah, the five books of the Law. But it contained the Law of God. It was the Word of God - a recorded copy of the Word of God kept safe against that time when it might be safe for the Word of God to be displayed again.
Remember, the reign of Manasseh was horrific on godly men and women. Manasseh spread innocent blood. He killed people who were godly. He hated God. He hated the worship of God. He hated the people of God and his purpose was to kill them, to destroy them, to stamp them out.
We see the same thing years later in the reign of the Seleucid emperor, Antiochus IV Epiphanes - spilled blood of godly men and women like crazy, hated them. Held Jerusalem and made Jerusalem, made the temple a heap of uncleanness. Manasseh did the same kind of thing in that day. It seems right to cleanse the idols of the land and the high places throughout the land, refurbishing and repairing the house of God that his father and grandfather had allowed to go to ruin.

That makes sense. That seems right. But now he sees fully the danger facing his people. He hears the holiness of God proclaimed. He hears the call to holiness in worship and life extended to the people of God, the call to covenant obedience and the promise of judgment for unbelief and disobedience and disregard and he tears his clothes.
What does that mean, tearing of the clothes? Listen to Matthew Henry. One of the things I love about Ecclesiastes chapter 5 is that Solomon is telling his readers to be mindful of their approach to the house of God because they will find God there and God will deal with them. He reminds us that as we step into worship, we step into the presence of God who knows us intimately and deeply and He will deal with us. We can expect a meeting with Him. We can expect a meeting with Him! We can expect to hear from Him. We can expect not just a sleepy pursuing of a couple of chapters; we can expect to hear the voice of God as we sit down to His Word.
A voice, a truth that leaves its stamp, that leaves a mark, that makes an imprint, that makes a change. Oh, that it would happen to us. Can we hear from God?
Notes and Commentary on Isaiah 36–47
Can we lay all those things aside and understand that the most important moments in life this day are about to happen as we begin to meet with God in the pages of His Word, as we begin to draw our hearts to Him in prayer? Can we understand that the phone will wait? Can we understand that everything will wait? Oh, that we would read like Josiah reads. Oh, that I would read like Josiah reads and leap from my chair and run out and do business with Jesus and business for Jesus because of what He said to me!
May we all read as Josiah reads. Well what does he do? How does he respond? Look what verse 21 tells us. Now you can go through the pages of your Bible all day long. Keep me pure in Your sight, Lord Jesus. In Your holy and all-powerful Name I ask, Amen!!! May I suggest that all of us read Matthew You are an offense to Me. It was a temple where various gods were worshipped. The main source of the Jordan River flows from under this mountain. Jesus and His disciples likely walked on these very steps when they visited Caesarea Philippi.
This is a depiction of what the sacred high places in Caesarea Philippi may have looked like at the time of Jesus. The biggest stone in the Western Wall of the Temple Mount, often called the Western Stone, is revealed within the tunnel excavations. That stone ranks as one of the heaviest objects ever lifted by human beings without powered machinery. The stone has a length of Estimates place its weight at tons. Now because of this King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, prayed and cried out to heaven. There is a consistent message which runs through the entire Bible: If we choose to stand with the Lord, we cannot lose.
Hebrews 11 tells us of many who found victory by suffering and dying for the cause of the Lord.
Throughout history, whether to live or die, a person standing with God has been found to be unbeatable. King Sennacherib was right when he proclaimed that his armies had triumphed everywhere. But he did not know the God of Hezekiah and Isaiah! What a powerful team these two made.
The King and the Prophet! They proved that there is more strength in fervent prayer than in weaponry, more power in faith in God than in armies. The key verse for today and Your response bring great encouragement to me. When Your cause, Your Church, and Your people are mocked and held up to ridicule, I rejoice because I know that the scoffers will return home ashamed, as Sennacherib did.
Thank You, Lord, for responding when I pray, and thank You for prayer partners. Many Huntley Street viewers will remember Rev. Norm MacLaren. He led our prayer partners team for many years and would report daily from the prayer phones with news of what was happening on the phones and what God was doing in lives. Norm would give us a Word from God which helped provide courage to continue. I had known Norm for years before he came on our full-time team.
Shortly thereafter he was elected to the Board of Directors of Crossroads, where he served for 8 years. Then came a really big battle in the Crossroads ministry. Twenty-five years ago we found ourselves facing a large overrun in the costs of building the new Crossroads Centre. I would be in the Chapel crying out to God for His supply very early each morning. Then one morning I found a prayer partner who drove all the way from Kitchener-Waterloo to Burlington.
Every morning, Monday through Friday, for several months he joined me in crying out to God in fervent prayer. You guessed it. It was Norm, who was at that time a Pastor of a great church in Kitchener, Ontario. He had big responsibilities in his congregation and he would be back on the job there at the usual time when he would be expected to be at his church, never neglecting his congregation.
Thanks Norm for being an Isaiah to this would-be leader. The new building and TV production equipment was all paid for within several years without cutting back on existing outreach ministry television productions, and fresh new soul winning programs were developed. With changes in leadership Crossroads has debt once again and needs your sacrificial help. Lorna, our precious and strong leader, needs your help big time!!! Thank you! Thank you!!! Please forgive me for going way over my words goal. Yours for finding a prayer partner. The tunnel is adjacent to the Western Wall and is located under buildings of the Old City of Jerusalem.
While the open-air portion of the Western Wall is approximately 60 metres ft long, the majority of its original length is hidden underground. The tunnel allows access to an additional metres 1, ft of the Wall. Since the Temple Mount is controlled by Muslims, these Jewish women are as close as they can get to what was the Holy of Holies.
This photo was also taken in the Western Wall Tunnel and is looking straight down through plexiglass on which visitors can walk. The excavations have gone quite deep. From the region of the Qumran caves in Israel, you can see the Dead Sea with the mountains of Moab in the background.
Though the Jordan Rift Valley is one of the most uninhabitable desert locations on earth, there is much agriculture. So he prospered. There were three elements for successful living demonstrated by Hezekiah. These are vital principles for us to follow in order to live successfully as Christians. Let us not be fooled by those who seek material gain for themselves by manipulating others. Lord God, most of all I pray for grace to keep the greatest commandment, which is to love You with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my mind.
Also, Lord, grant that I may keep today the second greatest commandment, which is to love my neighbour as myself. Thank You for helping me to watch for the opportunities to direct my love for You into loving others. He graduated from the same school from which I graduated in , a seminary now known as Masters College and Seminary. He showed me one of his assignment papers, for which he received a good grade.
It was a sermon based in 2 Chronicles It took a lot of faith for King Jehoshaphat to believe that the words J ahaziel claimed to be from God were true. Jehoshaphat chose to believe. Faith is a choice. Praise and worship tear down strongholds of the enemy. The Arch of Titus has provided the general model for many of the triumphal arches erected since the 16th century, including the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
So there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon, son of David, King of Israel, there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. In New Testament times these newscasters were called evangelists. So those who took the Gospel everywhere and announced the news of Christ were called Evangelists. This atonement is ours today through the passover sacrifice of Jesus as the final Sacrifice as the Lamb of God.
I pray for Crossroads Family of Ministries. May every team member burn with a holy unquenchable flame to bring people to Jesus. May winning souls to Jesus continue to be the 1 priority. The greatest example of a true Evangelist to masses of people in our time is Billy Graham. The greatest motivator for personal evangelism in our time is the late Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ. Bill Bright did the same in his appearances with me on television. I took Bill Bright to lunch several times and without fail he witnessed for Christ to the waiter or waitress serving us.
I made sure to leave a larger than usual tip in order to underline the love with which Bill spoke of Jesus. I can never be content to maintain the status quo in ministry. If TV programs, camping ministries, World Expos, etc. This was once a magnificent staircase that led up to the Temple Mount. To get to my motivating verse for my 4 a. Making notes or journaling as we pray is a very effective way to check up on ourselves. Lord God, I pray for consistency in my appointments with You every morning. Jesus shows me the way to learn how to please You every day. I give myself to You as fully as I know how.
I said Yes:.
When I was a teenager, I was part of our high school basketball team. I remember having to wake up extremely early one morning in order to attend a practice, which our overly zealous coach had scheduled well before the school day began. My teammates and I were far from enthusiastic about having to get our bodies out of bed that early, but that was the only time the gymnasium was available before our big championship game.
However, when I got to the living room, I was surprised to see the lights on and hear someone speaking. When I looked to my left, I saw my Dad kneeling next to the couch with dozens of pieces of paper spread out all over the furniture. I paused long enough to figure out what was going on. Dad was in prayer, weeping and interceding before God on behalf of the many who had written to him as a result of the recently launched Huntley Street daily TV program. He never saw me as I continued tiptoeing out the door and off to my practice.
That experience deeply impacted me. He was called by God to share the love of Jesus to a lost and hurting world. After that, I could think of nothing else I wanted to do with my life than work with my Dad… and I had the privilege of doing that for 30 years. You can see the divider in the stairway to separate those who were unclean from those who came up purified. He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper.
The history of Judah is like a roller coaster. Two Kings, Uzziah, and his son Jotham, did what was right. God blessed them and all of Judah. Let us not despair.
